Government backbench in open revolt over housing shortfall

First-term MPs are demanding the Treasurer 'stop pretending the numbers add up'.

It began as a private WhatsApp group. Within a week, more than 20 first-term Labor MPs were exchanging blunt assessments of the government's flagship housing target.

One draft letter, seen by Dazzling Insights, accuses the Treasurer's office of "pretending the numbers add up when everyone in our electorates knows they don't."

A dangerous precedent

Backbench revolts are rare this early in a term. Senior figures worry that a public split now could set the tone for the entire parliament.

The Prime Minister's office has offered private briefings to any MP who requests one. So far, more than half the caucus has.
